Problem
Existing apps optimise for entry: add a receipt, tap the people, done. In twelve interviews nobody’s pain was entry — it was the two weeks after, chasing a friend for £14 without becoming the person who chases friends for £14. So the brief moved: not "make splitting faster" but "make settling socially free".

Wireframes & iteration
Three structures tested with eight people. V1 buried balances in a tab; V2 put a running balance in the header and lost it on scroll; V3 made the balance the home screen. V3 won by a mile.

Final UI
One loop: see what you owe, settle it, watch it clear. Nudges are written in the app’s own voice, so the user never composes the awkward message themselves.

Reflection
I over-invested in the receipt scanner. It demoed beautifully and almost nobody used it — the interviews had told me that and I built it anyway because it was the fun problem. Next time the research gets to veto the roadmap.
